Breakdown of Your Full Blood Count Test Result

You may not be a medical practitioner, but you’ve realized most of the time doctors request Full Blood Count (FBC) to be done on patients’ blood samples (By A Medical Laboratory Scientist -MLS). You keep wondering what it is. Out of curiosity, you may have peeped at your FBC report, and all you could make out of it were lots of three letter words, figures and graphs that make no sense to you. Have a seat and enjoy this eye opener.

To understand full blood count, you have to know what is in your own blood. Blood comprises of

  • Cells, known as red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.
  • Plasma, which is the liquid part of your blood. Plasma enables blood flow.

Red blood cells contain haemoglobin. Haemoglobin makes your blood have the characteristic red colour. Ever heard the saying “when the last tree falls, the last man dies?”. Or heard that man needs oxygen to survive?. The oxygen binds to haemoglobin in the red blood cells and since blood circulates around the body, oxygen is delivered to all your body parts for various life processes.

White blood cells are the fighting agents in your body. Just like the security service that have different groups of people for various tasks, like soldiers, police, etc., there are different white cells which fight against different disease-causing organisms. Neutrophils fight against bacteria, Eosinophils-parasites, Lymphocytes-viruses, etc.

Platelets allow blood to cease flow to the outside of the body when you get a cut so that you don’t lose a lot of blood.

Plasma contains food nutrients, dissolved gases, hormones, proteins, waste products, etc. and distributes them as they circulate in the body.

Now that we’ve had a picture of our blood components, it will be quite easy to understand the full blood count report. The parameters are abbreviated as:

RBC = Red blood cell

HGB/HB = Haemoglobin

WBC = White blood cells

NEU = Neutrophils

BAS = Basophils

MON = Monocytes

EOS = Eosinophils

LYM = Lymphocytes

PLT = Platelets

There are reference ranges to which the figures/results are compared to, to know whether they’re high or low. The parameter which is high or low will determine what’s wrong with the patient.

HB:     High: Polycythemia (abnormal increase in haemoglobin concentration, which may be caused by dehydration, living at high altitudes where there’s low oxygen, smoking, etc.)

Low: Anaemia (abnormal decrease in haemoglobin concentration, which may be caused by lack of folic acid, vitamin B12, iron, or loss of blood through bleeding, etc.)

NEU:   High: Bacterial infection, stress, burns, inflammation (response to an injury/damage to living tissue)

Low: Exposure to radiation, effect of the intake of toxic drugs. lack of vitamin B12.

LYM:  High: Viral infection, leukaemia (cancerous disease affecting the WBCs)

Low: Prolonged illness, weakened immune system.

MON:  High: Viral or fungal infection, tuberculosis, leukaemia.

Low: Bone marrow (it produces blood cells) dysfunction, treatment with cortisol (hormonal drug)

EOS:   High: Allergic reactions, parasitic infection, autoimmune diseases (a disease in which the body produces antibodies that attack its own tissues)

Low: Stress, drug toxicity.

BAS:   High: Allergic reactions, leukaemia, cancers.

Low: Pregnancy, ovulation, stress.

PLT:    Clotting disorders.

There are other parameters such as red cell indices, which are technical.

Next time when you receive your FBC result, at least you’ll have a fair idea about what it entails. We shall bring you a second part of this article which details other aspects.

[Pt. 2] Vice or Vengeance; Why Robbers Will Continue to Rob Us

…When the so-called non-conformists are not engaged in any act, they like to listen to music, especially those songs which express expletive vulgarity. When asked why they like to listen to such songs, they told me such tracks really depict how they feel. But how do they really feel? They feel that the world has neglected them. They think that nobody cares about them.

When they see their colleagues they were in basic school with, who have been able to climb the ladder to higher heights, mostly because they had some people to love and care for them, they begin to perceive how unlucky they have been, or how unfair the world is. They are not likely to vote or take part in any social obligations. Instead, they would invest their energies in building themselves to take back what the society has taken from them.

They can only do this by finding ways of bullying those who are privileged or affluent and taking part of their belongings or money away because such people would not voluntarily give them what they have worked for or in most cases, inherited. They know that when they get some of the things these people have, the society would show them love, at least that’s what the music they listen to, and the movies they watch inform them. That is not to say the music they listen to, or the movies they watch have corrupted their moral beings. It is the robbing of what they need by the society which has corrupted their conscience- the principal coordinator of the moral being.

When you critically examine the principles that govern man as a moral being, it would be clear that, man as a moral being is made up of three or four very distinct, but closely related components, which when not well regulated, could lead to corruption of the mind. These constituents are the desires and the affections including self-love; the will or volitions; the governing moral principles or what is commonly termed conscience; and lastly, the moral relation of man to his deity, or what has been termed religion.

These three or four constituents are one way or the other contingent on one another. An exercise of the will of an individual could be directed towards, first, an action to be performed to others; second, an object to be obtained; both of which are connected to a previously existing mental condition of the individual.  In regard to objects to be obtained, such a person’s mental condition would be that of desire- and that of actions towards others would be affection.

The conscience coordinates the exercise of volitions or the will of a man and how they are influenced by the affections or desires of such a man. Sometimes, the relation between a man and their Deity could regulate how they exercise their volitions. Clearly, it could be inferred that the desires and affections of an individual are the fundamental principles, upon which all other moral constituents build upon. That is to say, the affections or desires are the moving powers from which our actions proceed.

The affections, particularly, have been demonstrated to be that aspect of the moral being that enables an individual to relate with other men. They have been grouped into two, somehow contrasting groups: Uniting affections, including justice, benevolence, veracity, friendship, love, patriotism and domestic affections. Such affections bind a person to the entire community: an individual is obligated to demonstrate such affections towards others. In addition, there are defensive affections, including jealousy, disapprobation, and anger. How these affections are exercised depend largely on how other men exercise their own moral principles on an individual or how an individual perceive the morals of others to be.

If for instance, a person feels that he is part of a larger community because the community exhibits such uniting affection as love towards them, it is likely that such a person would exhibit one of the uniting moral principles, for example, patriotism in return. In a like manner, a person would employ a more defensive affection in response to the reverse situation-when they perceive other humans do not exercise a uniting affection such as love, justice or veracity towards them.

Such is the case of the four persons I interacted with, who do not feel any love, justice or any of the uniting affections from their immediate community or the society at large, so they employ defensive mechanisms resulting from acting on their defensive affections. The defense mechanisms such as bullying others are what society terms vice. But are these really vice or vengeance, serving only as defensive mechanism for those involved in such acts?

I do not intend to applaud these acts, but if our attentions are not directed towards the fundamental cause of them, regardless of how many churches we established, how many religious leaders we train or how large our prisons are, the number of criminals would keep increasing. So we should extend the uniting affections to everyone, especially those who are deprived of them, not because such acts keeps us closer to our Deity, but also such acts makes others feel a sense of belonging to the society.  As we celebrate this month of love, we should all endeavor to show more of the uniting affections to such people, as this is the most likely way to properly do away with acts of bullying and other ruffianisms.

Video: Dhat Gyal Pays Tribute to Ebony

If you know Ebony or listen to her every well you’ll realize Ebony was one of her idols. She actually broke into the music scene with a cover of “Sponsor.” Just as her death came as a shock to all of us, Dhat Gyal didn’t take it lightly. In view of that she hit the studio to record this emotional and heartfelt tribute to the lost queen.

Hallowed – Tell Me (Mixed by Larynx & Mickey Myco)

Hallowed is a student who is inspired by his mom, born and bred in Juapong, V/R (JamTown). He’s not limited to any style of music but loves Hip-Hop music. “Tell Me (Gbloenam)” is about a guy having problems in a relationship with a lady, asking why she’s treating him unfairly. I doubted someone could actually remake Magnom’s “My Baby” till I heard Hallowed’s song. Enjoy!

Tribute to Ebony

This is not a news report to tell you Ebony has kicked the bucket. I’m sure by now you’ve heard it and even seen pictures of her lifeless body. Upon hearing the news, I was so sad and couldn’t bring myself together to write a blog post. But when the adrenaline settles, writing is my only therapy.

To wake up on a Friday morning to this sad news is totally heartbreaking. She had really got to her peak, and was ready to take Africa by storm. It had been a very long while since we had a female artiste reign above the equals. Last time we saw it was Mzbel. Ebony was more promising. Amidst all her sexually-appealing performances, we loved her. You’re actually reading this article because you care about her.

All humans are bound to die but we didn’t know this is how Ebony would go — through a fatal accident on the popular Accra-Sunyani motorway, specifically at Mankranso as reports reach us. And oh! she didn’t die alone… a popular Twitter influencer I follow Franky Kuri has also passed away. She happened to be her good friend and personal assistant. Also, a soldier who happened to be her bodyguard with the name Atsu Vondee died in the collision.

I don’t want to hear any pastor use her death as an example to solidify their point of living a quiet life, and not rushing in life, and whatnots, though I’ll hear it. Some may even say she lost her life because of her sins. Romans 6:23 says that the wages of sin is death, but we can’t be so judgmental. If we all understood God’s ways then at least someone could prove to me why all these porn actresses are walking around with healthy lives.

For the first time we were going to have a solo secular female artiste win VGMA Artiste of the year. It saddens me she’ll not be present on that stage to take her own trophy, and enjoy the glorious moment. Oh somebody play me Methodist Hymnal 672 “Till We Meet.” Even though Ebony was a success at being the leader of “bad b*tches” and so-called “slay queens” she had a positive side to her. And I’m not even going to refer to her songs “Maame Hwɛ” and “Aseda.” If you look beyond the smoke of fame surrounding her, you could see a truly positive side of her.

No person deserves to die at such a young age! With her talent, no one could accurately foretell the future. She was just starting. Who knew what the future held? But for now, it’s just a lof of R.I.P’s and “May her soul rest in peace” statements. This thing called life… One day you’re the greatest, the next day you’re just a gathering of dust. We pray for all her relatives and very close friends. You feel the pain more than any of us! Your words would’ve been more emotionally felt if you wrote this article.

Priscilla Opoku-Kwarteng, damirifa due

May your soul rest in peace.

Till we meet…
