Yaw Nnamdi better known by his stage name YN the Afropikin is a young singer, songwriter and producer who does an Afrofusion of sounds i.e. a blend of the African sound with other sounds from around the world. He doubles up as a professional physiotherapist.

“one of the days i’d never forget is when i got the message that i’ve gained admission to university of ghana. y’all should’ve seen me jumping.. lol” – YN

YN commenced his educational journey at Leads International School and Kings High School both in Lagos, Nigeria. He moved to Ghana in 2006 where he attended Yilo Krobo School (YKS) in Somanya, Eastern Region. Nnamdi gained excellent grades that landed him a qualification to study a four-year programme in B.Sc. Physiotherapy in the University of Ghana, Legon and graduated with the class of 2016.

Although he always had a passion for music, hence he was always found listening to music, his musical journey started from high school where he started writing rhymes and discovered his rapping ability. However, he took it serious in his final year in university when he felt a burning sensation to do Afro music. That’s when he found his sound.

During the days of experimenting sounds he did songs which were Rap/Hip-Hop but the realisation came after his first major single ‘Passenger’, an Afro-Soul music which got massive appeal. Thence he started polishing his craft and approached music professionally in 2017 after the release of his accepted second single, ‘KEDE.’

“i do afrofusion! it feels natural & spiritual” – YN

As already indicated, his style of music is termed as Afro-Fusion. Afrobeats happens to be a major sector for YN because it enables him to explore his roots as a native of both Nigeria and Ghana. He has a soft spot for African percussion and melodies, and describes them as distinct characteristics to his sound. Nnamdi prefers singing in Pidgin language because he grew up speaking it and he’s most fluent in it. Also because he tends to communicate effectively with his people and connect with a common vibe.

“I Derive inspiration from africa’s musical greats. Fela kuti is like a grandad when i get in my element” – yn

YN gains inspiration from everyone doing good music most especially Nigeria’s legend Fela Kuti and Femi Kuti. He is a proud African who despises living a double personality, as he likes to keep it real. He sees music to be a powerful tool which has a huge impact on people. He describes the energy and vibrations that come with music as spiritual.

He has a song with Yaaba Okani titled ‘Tender’. It’s an African love song woven with afro melodies. He is working with a lot of ace producers including hitmaker, Kuvie. He aims to reach the world with his music and influence his listeners.
